Hydrogen islands initiative for effective showcase
Islands worldwide can benefit from hydrogen energy
systems to reach energy self-sufficiency while preserving
their pristine environment. At the same time, these
“hydrogen islands” are genuine showcases for the future
development of a global scale hydrogen inclusive economy.
Indeed, such individual projects have already been
implemented successfully in various parts of the world (cf.
Dr. Frano Barbir’s presentation). For these reasons, it is
now clear that the time has come to capitalize on this
know-how and share it within a formal network. Launched in
Brussels on 10 October 2007 at the instigation of the
International Centre for Hydrogen Energy Technologies, the
Hydrogen Islands Initiative endeavours to establish such a
network with the following goals:
- Facilitating exchange of technical and organizational
information between similar projects on islands all over
the world;
- Providing technical and organizational assistance for
starting projects;
- Linking users, suppliers, financiers, local
governments and international organizations;
- Popularizing hydrogen energy and its applicability to
island communities worldwide.
