Transporting hydrogen from one place to another
The transportation of hydrogen from its point of production to its point of use is termed hydrogen distribution and includes all infrastructure between the central or distributed production facility and the hydrogen dispenser or stationary power device. There are three basic forms of hydrogen distribution:
- By pipelines;
- By trucks that carry compressed gaseous hydrogen;
- By trucks that carry liquefied hydrogen.
The preferred type of hydrogen distribution depends on the distances involved, the quantities to be delivered and various economic and technological issues. Depending on each distribution facility, this could also include temporary storage or compression stations. Considerable work on optimising hydrogen distribution systems is being undertaken in the USA.
